The Top40 was up close to 1% on Friday led higher by resources. US equities also made record highs on Friday. Anglo American gained 3.5% along with Billiton adding 3%. Retailers were also broadly higher with Woolies jumping 4%.

The South African Reserve Bank left interest rates unchanged yesterday. The Top 40 fell 0.5% on the back of a weaker resource sector. Retailers remained strong with Woolies and Shoprite gaining 1.4% and 1.8% respectively.

The Top40 gained over 1% yesterday. SA Breweries gained over 4% and the retailers were particularly strong. Clicks gained over 5% after an upbeat trading update. The US Fed maintained their tone of “patience” however despite the consistency the US markets fell sharply.

Resources finally had a better day on Friday (+2.9%). The Top40 however fell0.2% led lower by bank and industrials. Today is very mixex at the open with much caution as the Chinese market is down 10% on the back of brokers curbing back lending for gearing for clients.

A massive down day saw the Top40 close 3.2% in the red. The resource sector was down over 65 with Glencore falling the most (-9.5%). Retailers remained buoyant with Massmart, and Foschini closing up over 1%. Woolies trading update this morning has helped it’s shares jump 3% at the open.
