ARTHUR BUCHNER
Founder | Director | Investment Strategy

Arthur Buchner is the founder and a Director of Courtney Capital, with over three decades of experience in financial markets and a deep specialisation in derivatives and investment strategy. He holds a Bachelor’s degree with majors in Mathematics and Economics and began his professional career teaching mathematics and economics before transitioning into financial markets.

Arthur entered the investment industry in the early 1990s and went on to build extensive experience in derivatives trading and structured market strategies. He held senior leadership roles at several major financial institutions, including serving as Director and Head of Derivatives Trading at Nedbank Capital, where he was responsible for futures and options trading, proprietary trading books, and complex derivative structures. During this time, he was also involved in the development of South Africa’s listed derivatives and CFD markets.

In 2008, Arthur took what was intended to be a short sabbatical from the industry. That sabbatical quickly evolved into the formation of Courtney Capital, initially established as a proprietary trading firm focused on arbitrage opportunities present in the market at the time.

In 2010, Courtney Capital expanded to include a private client CFD division, with Willem Faul joining the firm. Following consistently strong results for clients, the decision was made in 2016 to launch the firm’s hedge fund, marking a further evolution of the business into professional asset management.

Arthur plays a key role in shaping Courtney Capital’s investment philosophy and strategic direction. Working closely with the portfolio management team, he is deeply involved in the ongoing development and refinement of investment strategies, with a particular focus on the use of derivatives to protect capital and enhance risk-adjusted returns.

Known for his disciplined, risk-aware approach and deep understanding of market dynamics, Arthur remains committed to building a business defined by independence, integrity, and long-term thinking. His experience and strategic insight continue to underpin Courtney Capital’s investment process and culture.

WILLEM FAUL
Director | Portfolio Manager

Willem Faul is a Director of Courtney Capital and the firm’s lead portfolio manager, with decades of hands-on experience in financial markets. He holds a BCom Honours degree in Accounting from North-West University and has dedicated his professional life to investment management since the early 1990s.

His journey into markets began long before real-time data and online trading platforms, quite literally waiting for the morning newspaper to track share prices. This early discipline and curiosity evolved into a lifelong passion for trading, which has remained his sole professional focus throughout his career.

Willem has managed client capital at Courtney Capital for many years and currently oversees the majority of the firm’s assets. His investment philosophy is rooted in simplicity and discipline, buying quality assets at attractive valuations and selling when value is realised. While his approach is straightforward, it is continuously refined to adapt to changing market conditions, with a strong emphasis on risk management and capital preservation.

A firm believer in mental agility and strategic thinking, Willem sharpens his decision-making through daily chess. His consistent track record has played a meaningful role in building and preserving long-term wealth for clients across market cycles.

SHELDON GOUDGE
Wealth Manager

Sheldon Goudge is a wealth manager at Courtney Capital, focused on helping individuals and families build, protect, and manage their wealth through thoughtful, long-term financial planning. Born in Durban, he holds a Bachelor of Commerce with a major in Economics from the University of Pretoria, where his interest in financial markets and economic systems was firmly established.

He began his career at Investec in Johannesburg, working within the Private Bank environment and gaining early exposure to high-net-worth client needs and professional banking standards. In 2018, Sheldon joined Courtney Capital as an assistant to the portfolio management team, working on the trading desk where he developed strong market, analytical, and investment skills.

Over time, Sheldon became increasingly involved in portfolio management before returning to Durban to establish and grow the firm’s Wealth Management division. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Investment Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Planning, reflecting his commitment to combining sound investment principles with holistic financial advice.

In 2025, he was recognised as one of Citywire’s Top 50 Independent Financial Advisers. His passion lies in helping clients gain clarity and confidence in their financial decisions, ensuring their investment strategies remain aligned with their lives as they evolve.

MARC KOURIE
Investment Specialist & Trader

Marc Kourie has been part of Courtney Capital since 2013 and brings over a decade of experience in investment management and financial markets. He completed his schooling at Trinity House before earning a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and an Honours degree in Investment Management from the University of Johannesburg.

Marc has completed all required JSE-related qualifications, including the relevant JSE examinations, Regulatory Examinations (RE), and Registered Persons Examinations (RPE), providing him with a strong technical and regulatory foundation.

At Courtney Capital, Marc plays an important role within the investment team, where he is known for his disciplined approach, strong analytical capability, and consistent execution. He remains focused on delivering long-term value for clients through careful market analysis and risk-aware trading.

MARCO OLEVANO
Trader & Fund Manager

Marco Olevano is an experienced investment professional with over 15 years’ experience across stockbroking, proprietary trading, and portfolio management. Born and educated in Welkom, Free State, he relocated to Johannesburg to pursue a career in finance.

He holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Johannesburg and a Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Accounting from the University of South Africa, graduating cum laude. Marco is a CFA® charterholder and an active member of the CFA Institute, adhering to the highest global standards of investment analysis and ethical practice. His technical expertise is further supported by a comprehensive suite of JSE- related qualifications.

Marco’s career includes roles at BP Bernstein, Courtney Capital, and Nedbank Private Wealth Stockbroking, where he developed a strong reputation for his specialist expertise in derivatives and structured trading strategies. He later spent two and a half years in the United Kingdom as a senior execution trader and analyst at a systematic hedge fund, focusing on complex market strategies and advanced option structures.

At Courtney Capital, Marco manages both local EIB and offshore discretionary portfolios and contributes to the development of investment strategies. He is widely regarded for his expertise in technical analysis and multi-asset derivatives, with a particular strength in identifying key market inflection points. He is also an active contributor to the South African investment community, sharing market insights and education through the FinTwit (X) platform.

ESTHER ESTERHUIZEN
Client Relations & Administration

Esther Esterhuizen is responsible for client relations and administrative support at Courtney Capital. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in BA Communication from the University of the Orange Free State and has completed a Leadership Programme through QED.

With over three decades of experience in the financial services industry, Esther has worked across call centre management, branch management, and senior administrative roles. She has developed strong expertise in client onboarding, relationship management, marketing support, and account administration.

At Courtney Capital, Esther plays a key role in ensuring a smooth and consistent client experience, supporting both client retention and relationship growth. Outside of the firm, she is actively involved in her local community, serving on the D’Urbanvale Community Forum and the Durbanville Ratepayers Association, contributing to initiatives focused on environmental preservation and local nature reserves.
